This past Saturday I had the pleasure of speaking to a group of young girls and their parents on a panel with 8 other amazing women in STEM! At the STEM Gems event held during the annual Atlanta Science Festival, we each shared our unique perspectives on what it’s like to be a woman in STEM and encouraged young girls to discover the various paths into STEM.
Here are a few takeaways from the event:
Be curious! Every great advancement in any STEM field first started with a spark of curiosity. Don’t be afraid to ask, “What if”?
STEM doesn’t exist in a vacuum. You can pair your interest in STEM with any other interest you have, whether it’s art, music, film, education, retail, finance, or even health. Every industry needs STEM professionals!
Don’t be intimidated by STEM. We all have different approaches to learning. Find yours and be diligent in strengthening your skills and growing your knowledge.
Give girls role models. It is extremely important for young girls to have role models and mentors in STEM. It is helpful for them to see people they admire in roles they aspire to be in.
